WIPO's ePCT system allows you to file international patent applications entirely online — from initial filing through to national phase entry management. This tutorial covers the filing process step by step.

Before You Start

You need: a WIPO account (create at pct.wipo.int), a completed specification, claims, abstract, and drawings, applicant and inventor details, and a credit card or bank account for fee payment.

Step-by-Step Filing

  1. Log in to pct.wipo.int and select "ePCT" → "New International Application"
  2. Select your receiving office (typically your national patent office or the International Bureau)
  3. Complete the Request form (PCT/RO/101): applicant details, inventor details, priority claim (if claiming priority from an earlier application), and designation of states
  4. Upload the specification, claims, abstract, and drawings as PDF files
  5. Select your International Searching Authority (ISA) — the EPO, USPTO, JPO, KIPO, or other authorised ISA
  6. Calculate fees: international filing fee (CHF 1,330, reduced for online filing), search fee (varies by ISA, $1,000–$2,500), and transmittal fee (varies by receiving office)
  7. Pay online
  8. Submit

After Filing

Month 0: Filing receipt with international application number and filing date.

Month 3–4: Priority document (if claiming priority) must be filed or made accessible via DAS (Digital Access Service).

Month 16: International Search Report (ISR) and Written Opinion issued by the ISA.

Month 18: International publication (automatic).

Month 22 (optional): File a demand for International Preliminary Examination (Chapter II) if you want a second opinion before national phase.

Month 30: National phase entry deadline in most countries. File translations, pay national fees, appoint local agents.

ePCT Tools

ePCT provides real-time status tracking, document upload for amendments, communication with the International Bureau, and national phase entry management — all through a single online interface.
