Before spending money on protection, find out what already exists. A thorough prior art search is specialist work — patent attorneys and professional searchers do this with tools and instincts that take years to build, and for a filing decision their search is worth paying for. What you can do yourself, free, is the triage: search patents, products and papers well enough to catch obvious dead ends early and to walk into any professional conversation informed. Public disclosure before filing can destroy patent rights in most of the world, and unclear ownership can undo everything later. Most inventors who succeed at this don't do it entirely alone. This stage is about deciding what you genuinely can do yourself, finding a registered practitioner who knows your technical field, understanding what good counsel costs, and engaging them in a way that keeps your bill down.

The application you file defines the protection you'll ever get — especially the claims. This stage covers choosing the application type, getting the details exactly right, filing, and the deadlines that start counting the moment you do.

A patent only protects you where it's granted, and the window to extend abroad is short. This stage explains the 12-month priority window, the PCT route, regional systems, and how to choose countries by where you'd actually manufacture, sell, or enforce.
