How to Prepare Patent Drawings Using Free Software
Last revised:

Professional patent illustrators produce the best results — but for provisional applications, utility models, and budget-constrained filings, free software can produce acceptable patent drawings if you follow the patent office formatting rules carefully.
Recommended Free Tools
Inkscape (inkscape.org): Open-source vector graphics editor. The best free tool for patent drawings — produces clean, scalable line art with precise control over line weights, reference numerals, and hatching patterns. Export as PDF or TIFF at 300+ DPI.
FreeCAD (freecad.org): Open-source 3D CAD. Create 3D models and export orthographic views (front, side, top) and perspective views. Post-process in Inkscape for reference numerals and line weight compliance.
LibreOffice Draw: Basic vector drawing tool included with LibreOffice. Sufficient for simple mechanical drawings with limited components. Less precise than Inkscape for complex illustrations.
OpenSCAD (openscad.org): Programmatic 3D modelling — useful for parametric designs. Export views for post-processing.
Patent Drawing Requirements (Quick Reference)
All offices require: black lines on white background, reference numerals on every component mentioned in the specification, consistent numbering across all figures, specific margins (typically 2.5cm on all sides for A4), minimum 300 DPI for electronic submission, and figure labels (Fig. 1, Fig. 2, etc.).
Solid lines = claimed elements. Dashed lines = environmental context (for design patents) or cross-sectional hidden features (for utility patents). Hatching = cross-section fill patterns indicating material type.
Workflow
- Create 3D model in FreeCAD (or sketch on paper and photograph)
- Export orthographic and perspective views as PNG/SVG
- Import into Inkscape
- Trace or clean up lines to uniform weight
- Add reference numerals (Arabic numerals, consistent across figures)
- Add figure labels
- Set page to A4 with correct margins
- Export as PDF at 300+ DPI
