How to Prepare Patent Drawings Using Free Software

For provisionals, utility models, and budget-constrained filings. Professional illustrators are best — but free tools can produce acceptable results.

Patent Drawing Requirements (All Offices)
Black lines on white background
Reference numerals on every component
Figure labels (Fig. 1, Fig. 2…)
Margins: 2.5cm all sides (A4)
Minimum 300 DPI for electronic submission
Solid lines = claimed; dashed = context
01
Step 1
Create or Capture Your Design
Create a 3D model in FreeCAD (freecad.org) and export orthographic views, OR sketch on paper and photograph, OR use annotated CAD screenshots. Export views as PNG or SVG.

Step 2
Trace & Clean Up in Inkscape
Import into Inkscape (inkscape.org) — the best free tool for patent drawings. Trace or clean up lines to uniform weight. Inkscape produces clean, scalable vector line art with precise control over line weights, reference numerals, and hatching.
03
Step 3
Add Reference Numerals & Labels
Add Arabic reference numerals to every component mentioned in the specification. Number consistently across all figures. Add figure labels (Fig. 1, Fig. 2…).
04
Step 4
Format & Export
Set page to A4 with correct margins (2.5cm). Ensure all lines are black on white. Export as PDF at 300+ DPI. Cross-check that every figure number referenced in the specification has a corresponding drawing.
Pitfalls to Avoid

Inconsistent Reference Numerals

If component 12 is the "handle" in Fig. 1, it must be labelled 12 in every figure where it appears. Inconsistency confuses examiners and weakens the application.

Low Resolution

Patent offices require minimum 300 DPI. Low-resolution screenshots or photographs will be rejected or appear illegible in the published application.

Using Free Tools for Design Patents

In a design patent, the drawings ARE the claim. Free tools are acceptable for provisionals and utility patents, but for design patents, invest $500–$1,500 in a professional patent illustrator. The drawings determine the scope of your protection.
